Here is where the numbers people ask us about in New Mexico actually come from:
- State agency numbers: see New Mexico state agency directories. The agencies index on NewMexico.gov is the statewide starting point. The Public Education Department answers at (505) 827-5800, the State Personnel Office at (505) 476-7759, the Motor Vehicle Division at 1-888-683-4636, Taxation and Revenue at 1-866-285-2996, and the Public Regulation Commission at 1-888-427-5772. Note that 311 is not a statewide number in New Mexico. It only works where a city runs it, and in Albuquerque that means 311 or 505-768-2000.
- School and campus numbers: see school district and campus directories. UNM's operator is (505) 277-0111 and NMSU's is (575) 646-0111. The New Mexico State Library answers reference and circulation calls at (505) 476-9702.
- Public utility numbers: see utility phone numbers across the state. Emergency lines are separate from customer service. Smell gas and you call New Mexico Gas Company at 1-888-664-2726 or 911, not the billing line. Before you dig, call New Mexico 811 at 811 or 1-800-321-2537.
- Public safety numbers: see New Mexico public safety phone numbers. Dial 911 for an emergency and 988 for a crisis. The New Mexico Crisis and Access Line also answers around the clock at 1-855-662-7474. Albuquerque police non-emergency is 505-242-COPS.
- Health and social services: see health and social service phone numbers. The Department of Health helpline is 1-833-796-8773, and the department notes that Spanish is spoken. The Aging and Disability Resource Center answers at 800-432-2080, and Adult Protective Services takes reports at 1-866-654-3219. For food, housing, and utility help, 211 or (505) 245-1735 reaches United Way of North Central New Mexico.
- Public records requests: state agencies handle records under the Inspection of Public Records Act, and a request goes to the agency that holds the record rather than to a central office. The Public Education Department links its IPRA request page from its directory page. Birth and death certificates come from New Mexico Vital Records, with orders by phone through VitalChek at 877-284-0963, not from a county clerk. County clerks handle marriage licenses and recording. For court records, the New Mexico Courts HelpLine at (855) 268-7804 can point you to the right clerk.
